Types of Shower Door Configurations

Panel with Gap

Some customers are looking for just a splash guard or fixed panel to stop any water leakage and leave the door area open as a gap. This is ok if the shower head sprays straight down or the design of the shower allows for only one panel to be needed to stop water leakage.

Barn Door Style Sliding Shower

Cambridge Series Brushed Stainless

Barn door style showers usually have a header fixed to the walls. Most of the barn door setups require one panel to be fixed so it can help support the weight but for customers who want a dual door sliding option barn door check out our website and look for the Cambridge Series by CRL. This is a common shower we get requests for. Our other most common barn door is the Crescent series which can also be seen on our frameless shower door page.

Door and Panel with Clamps or Channel

Shower door with clamps

Many showers and tubs just require a door and panel. The fixed panel can be set in channel matching the hardware finish for smooth lines and easy to clean setup. Some customers prefer the clamp look. These glass clamps fit into a notch in the glass and are tightened and secure the fixed glass panels to the wall and floor. These showers can be custom fit and often require outages in the tile to be taken into consideration when measuring and ordering.

Door with Notch Panel

Doors with notched panels are used when there is a side wall or pony wall and the enclosure wants to fit all around it with an even top.

Door with Nib

If the shower door area is less than 32” but there is a pony wall then you can use a nib. That just means a panel on top of a pony wall that is flush with the wall and allows the shower door to snugly close against it.

90 Degree 3 Panel System

90 degree 3 panel notch

90-degree showers can have more than 3 panels. A 90-degree angle is just a right angle to allow an enclosure to be squared off against a wall. It can use pony walls and nibs. The angle where the glass meets can be mitered for a close fit and can be secured with a glass-over sleeve clamp.

Neo Angle Shower Door

135 degree showers or custom angle showers can be done as well.

What Color Finish for the hardware, header, hinges, clamps, channel

The most common finishes we use are: Chrome, Brushed Nickel, Matte Black and Oil Rubbed Bronze. Some hinges and hardware are available in more colors. See our website for more color options.

What Thickness of Glass

¼ quarter-inch glass isn’t used by us very often unless it’s a glass replacement for an old shower door. In some cases for tub enclosures, we’ll use the signature series from Southeastern Aluminum which is a budget friendly shower door that can be ¼ or 3/8 glass and is considered a semi-frameless slider of good quality.

3/8 glass is our most common thickness used. It’s nice for sliding doors because it’s lighter than ½ glass and it still has the same thickness so it feels strong.

½ glass is requested by some customers with extra large panels or shower enclosures or just because they like the idea of having ½ glass for extra strength.
